USING THE CHEER TECHNIQUE SYLLABUS

Using Cheer Technique To Start Your Squad

The Cheer Technique syllabus (PART ONE) has 8 Sections of definitions and techniques that you need to be familiar with for cheerleading.  They include general cheerleading terms, musical terms, a brief section on choreography, a decent coverage of anatomy, physiology and nutrition, and exercises for strength and flexibility.  Then there are jumps, basic dance steps, turns, leaps and kicks, cheer hand positions, arm motions, and body isolations. There is a brief section of basic stunt terminology, which is a good starting point for stunts and pyramids.

Towards the back of the book (PART TWO) there are sample dances, cheers, and chants.  Keep a finger in page 66 and try to get used to the abbreviations.  Skip the Rosettes if you are not working with young children.  Try reading aloud the Bronze dance on page 78 and letting someone else do the actions.  Remember, these are only samples.  Then try a chant on page 86 the same way.  If you want to start writing your own chants and cheers, you'll find the list of terms on page 85 helpful. All the sample dances and cheers and chants, as well as the exercises in section 4, are on the Cheer Technique video.

Getting Started

Follow these simple steps to start your training sessions and take it slowly.

  1. Read through the Teaching Points (page 24) for important information.
  2. First lesson - see page 31 to plan your session. Create your own lesson plan by choosing the content you wish to include for that day's training.
  3. Sections 2 and 5 - 8:  Start using cheer terminology, and try new things on a regular basis. Don't rush, but do keep increasing your knowledge and pass this on to keep your talented cheerleaders interested.
  4. Try using the exercises in Section 4 (page 42), which are very important for the strength and flexibility needed for cheerleading.
  5. Cheers, Chants and Dance - whilst unfamiliar with cheer choreography, use example ideas from Part Two (Page 65) of the Cheer Technique syllabus.

Stunting:

Using Cheer Technique For Cheerleader Medal Tests and Awards

The cheerleading medals are given to cheerleaders for showing a short display of cheers, chants and dances.  Each successful cheerleader is given a medal or trophy, a certificate, and a written assessment of their personal strengths and weaknesses. Coaches and teachers can plan special awards ceremonies to highlight the cheerleader’s progress and gain support from parents and friends for the cheerleading programme.
